9 Low Prep Gross Motor Indoor Activities

If you have active kids like mine then you know they need to burn off energy throughout the day. If for whatever reason you have to stay home say: rain, don’t want to get ready, your children’s activities get canceled for things beyond your control here are some activities you can do at home!

Staying home doesn’t have to be boring. That’s why I’ve created a list that will help your little develop their gross motor skills while having fun and minimizing screen time. Do you know what the best part is? It doesn’t require a whole lot of prepping. Winning!

1. Dance Party

Dancing silly with my kids might be one of my most favorite ways to be active with them. This can be something spontaneous an can seriously be done anywhere.

Some of our favorite songs to dance to are:

Freeze Dance. Kids can do the dance that is mentioned in the song. Skipping, dancing, jumping, twirling and of course freezing.

Hormiguita. This is a Spanish song where kids can shake the tiny ant off.

Mi Cuerpo Hace Música. This is a bilingual song that kids can dance along to. Chachachá!

These next two songs work best if you have something that your kids can make noise with (shakers, rattles, etc.)

I Know A Chicken and Shake!

Yes, I know these songs are all about shaking and dancing. What better way to get those wiggles out!

2. Alphabet Hunt

This idea is for toddlers and preschoolers who are learning their letters or you could do this with whatever your child is learning- colors, sight words, etc. Simply hide flashcards around the house, and when your child finds one, they must say what the letter is. Remember if you don’t have store bought flashcards you can easily make them with recycled paper or 3×5 index cards.

3. Building A Fort

Ok, this isn’t the most active activity on the list, except actually building the fort. However, my kids absolutely love putting ALL their toys in there which is great because it makes them run back and forth a good while. Sometimes I will give them a snack in there and the possibilities are endless.

4. Jump On The Bed

Rain or shine this must be a favorite for my kids. So why not let them have at it once in a while. You could even sing: Five Little Monkeys. My kids actually sing that to themselves as they jump. Ha!

5. Line Walk

Using painters tape (from the dollar store) make lines on the floor that your kids can follow. They have to walk on the line without “falling”. You can even make it a race. Get creative, you can even have them attempt to do it hoping on one foot.

6. Color Tag

This one is sort of like I Spy. Only when you call out a color they have to run and tag the color you just called out.

7. Catch

A good ol’ game of catch. You don’t even need a ball. You could simply use rolled up socks. Your kids can start catching and throwing from short distances and then getting further away each time.

8. Hide And Seek

This is so easy to do specially if your kids are small. Sometimes they only cover their eyes and think they are hiding. Use the whole house and take turns hiding.

9. Red Light Green Light

Stand or sit at a good distance and call out a color (red, yellow or green). Red means stop, yellow means walk and green means run! Once they have met you they can start over.

We did these games over the course of the week. They are time consuming and that’s the point. You want your kids to get those wiggles out. I hope you are able to enjoy staying home with your kiddos.
